People bring me yellow crystal all the time and ask the same thing — is this natural, or irradiated? It's not some mystery. I work with these stones every day at the factory, so let me walk you through it calmly: where the difference actually comes from, and why the ways to tell them apart all trace back to one thing — how irradiated yellow is actually made.

First, the principle: how irradiated yellow is made
The starting material for irradiated yellow is a white quartz with unusually high metal impurities. Besides iron — which gives the yellow — it carries a lot of aluminum, which gives a brown / smoky tone. The process irradiates it, then heat-treats it: the heat destroys the brown color centers (they're aluminum-based and not heat-stable) and leaves the more stable yellow ones. So the "irradiated yellow" in your hand was originally a smoky / tea-colored quartz, pushed to yellow.
Natural citrine isn't like that. It's essentially clean white quartz that picked up just a little iron and almost nothing else. Because the impurity load is so low, it's clear — the same kind of clean material in our natural crystal collection.
Keep that impurity difference in mind — every tell below follows from it.
1. Clarity: clear vs cloudy
Natural yellow carries only iron and almost no other impurities, so light passes straight through and it looks clear. The irradiated material is loaded with aluminum and other impurities, so the crystal looks turbid and dull. This one is directly the impurity difference — hold two up to the light and the natural one is visibly cleaner.

2. The orange hint in the color
Natural yellow is colored by iron alone, so the yellow carries a slight warm pull toward orange. Irradiated yellow is just the leftover pure yellow after the brown was burned off — it's a single, flat lemon yellow, and it never has an orange tone, because the coloring was reduced to yellow only. So if the yellow is dead flat with zero warmth, that's a reason to pause.

3. Light recovery — the one that follows straight from the principle
The brown color centers destroyed by heat are aluminum-based, and they're reactive. Even mild sunlight can bring them slowly back — so irradiated yellow, worn for a while and exposed to a bit of light, will darken again, even turn black. Natural citrine has no treated center like that; it's stable and won't blacken from normal wear.
This is the most practical test: wear it for a few days, and if you notice it going black, it is not natural.

4. Banding: natural is fine and narrow, treated is flat and even
Natural citrine shows thin, narrow growth bands — crisp, natural, never quite the same twice. Irradiated yellow is colored uniformly across the whole stone, so it has no real banding to speak of; in small round-bead bracelets you'll basically see one flat, even color with zero layering, and even on larger carved pieces the treated stone stays flat. So a strand of yellow beads in that dead-flat lemon yellow, with no banding at all, is, basically, the treated profile.

None of these is magic — they all follow from how irradiated yellow is made. When you're unsure, just go through them in order: clarity, the orange hint, wear it and watch for darkening, then banding. The treated stone rarely hides from all four.
One honest side note: some people use cracks as the test. But the raw material for irradiated yellow has cracks too, so that tell doesn't hold up — don't lean on it.
