How We Grade Natural Crystals

Posted by ZHOU WANGWANG on

There will be no grading distinction within our crystal chips collection, as these are not single pieces but rather collections that contain a mix of good and less ideal specimens. We only label AA grade and above to indicate that the product is high-grade natural crystal. Other natural crystal products without a grade label fall between B grade, standard grade, and A grade. The actual quality is subject to the product images provided.

How We Grade Natural Crystals: Understanding the A, A+, A++, and B System

When it comes to natural crystals, their beauty, rarity, and inherent energy are highly valued by collectors, jewelers, and metaphysical practitioners alike. However, not all natural crystals are created equal. To better assess the quality of these crystals, a grading system is often used that can range from B to A++, reflecting a range of qualities that determine their value and desirability. In this article, we will explore how we grade natural crystals using this classification system and what factors influence each grade.

1. The Grading System: B, A, A+, and A++

The grading of natural crystals is not a standardized system across all industries, but many jewelers, collectors, and crystal enthusiasts use a similar structure to classify them. The grading system often used includes the following levels:

  • Standard – Suitable for materials without grade variations
  • B Grade: Below average quality
  • A Grade: Good quality
  • A+ Grade: Very good quality
  • A++ Grade: Excellent or premium quality

Each of these grades represents a spectrum of attributes, including clarity, color, size, and overall condition. Let’s dive deeper into what each of these grades means.

Standard – Suitable for materials without grade variations
This grade typically applies to most agate, chalcedony, and jasper materials. Crystals with particularly exceptional characteristics may be classified as A+ or higher.

B Grade – Below average quality
A Grade – Good quality
These grades apply to a broad range of crystal products. Since grading standards can vary between different materials, the most accurate way to evaluate quality differences is by referring to the product images provided on each product page.

2. A+ Grade Crystals: Very Good Quality

A+ grade crystals are of higher quality, with fewer imperfections and more desirable characteristics. They are considered a premium selection but may still have minor flaws that prevent them from being labeled as perfect.

Characteristics of A+ Grade Crystals:

  • High Clarity: A+ grade crystals have excellent transparency, with very few visible inclusions, often only visible under magnification.
  • Near-Perfect Shape: These crystals tend to have a near-perfect, symmetrical shape with only minor surface irregularities. They may have sharp, well-defined edges and faces.
  • Intense Color: The color of A+ crystals is vibrant, rich, and consistent, with little to no color zoning or banding.
  • Minimal Cloudiness: These crystals are highly transparent, allowing light to pass through with minimal cloudiness or internal marks.

Use of A+ Grade Crystals: These crystals are often used in high-end jewelry, fine art collections, or for significant metaphysical purposes. They are prized for their visual appeal and spiritual potency, making them highly sought after.

3. A++ Grade :

A++ is the highest grade within our standard crystal bead and crystal jewelry collection. These gemstones offer outstanding color, clarity, and polish, making them ideal for premium bracelets, necklaces, and other high-quality jewelry projects.

However, A++ is still part of our standard bead grading system. For our finest jewelry-grade gemstones, we use the separate Premium designation, which represents an even higher standard of material quality.

Characteristics of A++ Grade Crystals:

  • Perfect Clarity: A++ grade crystals are almost entirely free of inclusions. Their internal structure is flawless, and they exhibit excellent transparency with no cloudiness or visible flaws.
  • Flawless Shape: These crystals are often perfectly formed, with precise, symmetrical faces and edges. They may be naturally occurring, but their shape and condition are near perfection.
  • Intense, Uniform Color: A++ grade crystals have a rich, uniform color that is free from zoning or banding. The color is deep and intense, often regarded as the epitome of the crystal's natural hue.
  • Exceptional Rarity: These crystals are rare and often come from specific, renowned regions known for producing the highest-quality minerals.

Premium Grade (Jewelry Grade)

Premium is our highest quality grade and is reserved exclusively for fine jewelry products.

Unlike our standard bead grading system (A, AA, A+, and A++), Premium is not simply a higher grade. It represents carefully selected jewelry-grade gemstones with exceptional clarity, color, and overall appearance.

These gemstones are cut from high-quality rough material with minimal natural fractures, making them suitable for faceted jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and earrings.

Because jewelry-grade rough stones are significantly rarer than standard bead material, Premium gemstones are produced in much smaller quantities and are considerably more valuable.

To help customers easily identify these products, all jewelry-grade gemstones on our website are labeled Premium.

4. Conclusion: The Value of a Crystal's Grade

The grading system—ranging from B to A++—helps to assess the relative quality of natural crystals, making it easier for buyers to understand what they are purchasing. While higher-grade crystals generally offer superior clarity, color, and shape, lower-grade crystals still have their place in various markets and are appreciated for their unique qualities. By understanding how crystals are graded, you can make more informed decisions when selecting crystals for jewelry, healing practices, or collections.

Whether you're buying a B grade crystal for its distinct appearance or an A++ grade crystal for its flawless beauty, each grade offers something valuable. Every crystal, regardless of its grade, carries with it the unique energies and natural wonders of the Earth.
